The Insight is Emotiv's second generation EEG headset, the successor to the Emotiv EPOC.
- It was to be targeted more towards to quantified self market rather than gaming (or whatever they were targeting with the EPOC headset), however, it was not a smashing success (to put it lightly).
An 'extender' was also promoted (and available as a reward for an extra ~$100 over the base unit) on the Kickstarter, which would allow this device to be isolated and powered via the Extender's internal battery, or from USB power pass-through. It was supposed to allow additional functions like recording sessions directly to SD card and external triggering, but I don't believe these features ever came to fruition and, AFAIK, the Extender itself was never available for purchase.
As this device works with Bluetooth 4.0 LE, you can (optimistically) use it with hardware that supports it. If you want to use it with a computer, the USB dongle supporting the low-power Nordic protocol (Emotiv EPOC USB L01) is probably the most reliable connection method.
Additional product information
Per Kickstarter comments + elsewhere
- Per Tan Le's comments, data recorded by the Insight (strictly through use of the bundled main app / apps?) will be...
- Uploaded directly to servers controlled by them in some fashion (stored in the cloud)
- It is stated that the raw EEG data is linked only to a user ID when stored.
- Any additional personal details will be stored in another database.
- User data is to be used for research purposes (see their Linkedin overview page for a bit more details)
- Differing license headsets (consumer / developer / researcher) have different firmware.
- Upgrading to a different license (Developer or Research) is stated to be possible,
- though it is not currently known what that would entail..
- The stretch goal @ $1,000,000 is a 6-axis inertial sensor; a 3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyro
- (InvenSense MPU-6xxx series, perhaps?).
- Per their Kickstarter, applications for Android, iOS, OS X, Linux, and Windows will be available for the device.
- The application is stated to be able to monitor states of Focus, Engagement, Interest, Excitement, Affinity, Relaxation, and Stress.
Additional info, per Emotiv
- This headset uses semi-dry polymer electrodes developed by Emotiv.
- The polymer electrodes were originally slated for use with the first-generation EPOC device, but that didn't happen.
- The device communicates with the host system via Bluetooth 4.0 LE.
- The 5 channels covered (10-20 / MCN system locations) are AF3 (left frontal), AF4 (right frontal), T7 (left temporal), T8 (right temporal), and Pz (central parietal).
- Internally, the sample rate of the headset is 2048 SPS before filtering. The functional sample rate returned via BT, after downsampling, is 128 SPS.
- The frequency response of the device is 1-43Hz.
- The (voltage) resolution of the device is 0.51µV (LSB).
- The internal Li-Poly battery has a capacity of 480mAh.. providing a minimum of 4 hours of use.
